The Times Leader is reporting that Mark Ciavarella sent a letter of resignation to Governor Rendell dated March 12, 2009 with an effective date of March 16, 2009.
Here is a link to Ciavarella's plea agreement. Item 21 is Resignation of Position. It states "The defendant agrees to resign the defendant's position as Judge of the Court of Common Please of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania within ten days of the acceptance by the Court of this agreement. He signed the agreement on January 23, 2009.
It would appear that his letter is a signal that the Court has accepted his plea arrangement.
It is interesting to note that the next line on 21 denies him the right to seek any public or elective office or position of public trust for ONLY 10 years(or the period of probation whichever is longer). Why would the government agree to such a stipulation? Go figure.
