O"Brien Supports Barletta Over Kanjorski

While not a straight line equation these are the words of Corey O'Brien prior to his defeat yesterday by Paul Kanjorski.

“The only way to stop the bleeding is electing Democrats with fresh faces and fresh visions,” O’Brien said. “If we don’t do that, and we go into the election with the same old tired incumbents, we’re going to get wiped out.”

From The Times Leader:

In unofficial results, Kanjorski, 73, of Nanticoke, received 33.783 votes to 23,236 for O’Brien and 11,512 for Brian Kelly, a professor at Marywood University. That means 34,728 Democrats who had a choice didn't choose Kanjorski. Lou Barletta received 28,311 votes. I wonder if Kanjorski can hear the buffalo pounding the turf.

Kanjorski's "$20,000.00 Midnight Donation" To Tom Leighton

"You mean they found out??!!!"

In a previous post SOP wrote about questionable donations to Tom Leighton's campaign when he ran for Mayor of Wilkes Barre. One of those donations was from Robert Mericle.

Robert Mericle gave a $300.00 donation on 06/10/2009 listed on page 19 and was charged by the U.S. Attorney's office on 08/13/2009. It had been common knowledge that Mr. Mericle was Participant No. 2 in a complaint filed by the U.S. Attorney on January 31, 2009 in the Luzerne County corruption scandal. Why did Tom Leighton accept the donation and why wasn't it returned?

Bill O'Boyle of the Times Leader writes an article today about a "midnight $20,000.00 donation" from a PAC associated with Paul Kanjorski to Tom Leighton's Senate campaign against State Representative John Yudichak. The real story will come out when Leighton's campaign finance report makes it to the Luzerne County website. Apparently Leighton is a little light in the fundraising arena and Kanjorski made the donation to bolster his report.

There is no secret of the love lost between Yudichak and Kanjorski after Yudichak's father stood up to a politician who has no shame and takes no blame for wasting the taxpayers' money on his own family. Mr. Yudichak had, not lets make that has the courage and human values not to accept and sit back while a politician tries to spoon feed the public on an issue that just won't go away. Kanjorski maintains that he was never charged in the Cornerstone Technologies issue and he is right about that. But he was judged by the public such that in the race between himself and Corey O'Brien the Times Leader editorial staff has not forgotten the incident and backed O'Brien in their primary battle.

If there were more Joseph Yudichak's in this world maybe the corruption in Luzerne County would have been in check a long time ago.

Look for our next post about how the House Majority Leader's assistant and campaign Treasurer doesn't know how to circulate nominating petitions.

Lou Barletta strongly supports Arizona law against illegal immigration

Mayor: Where do Kanjorski, O'Brien, Kelly stand on the new law?
May 3rd

Hazleton, PA – Today, Hazleton Mayor and 11th Congressional District Candidate Lou Barletta strongly endorsed the Arizona law that cracks down against illegal immigration.

Arizona’s SB 1070 gives local and state law enforcement officials more authority to query the federal government about a person's immigration status.

“Four years ago, the failure of the federal government to address the problems created by millions of illegal aliens led me to introduce and champion the Illegal Immigration Relief Act in Hazleton. It's amazing to me that now, four years later, the federal government has still failed to secure our borders and deal with the drain of illegal immigration on municipalities and states,” Mayor Barletta said. “I commend Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona for signing into law what her courageous legislators passed. I understand the pressure they will now be under because I faced that very same pressure in Hazleton by the very same groups. I was called some of the very same names they’re being called right now.
“But, after reviewing the law and speaking with experts who helped draft the legislation, I am confident that the Arizona law includes sufficient safeguards against racial profiling and protects the rights of legal American citizens,” Mayor Barletta continued. “Just like the people of Hazleton several years ago, the people of Arizona were confronted with a dangerous problem and they looked to their elected officials for leadership. I’m proud to say I led the fight here in Hazleton, and I congratulate Gov. Brewer and Arizona lawmakers for standing tall in the face of misguided criticism.

“I'm disappointed but not surprised that the federal government is not taking any steps to stem the flow of illegal aliens into the United States,” Mayor Barletta added. “Our borders remain wide open to those wishing to sneak into this country. That poses an incredible threat to our national security. And, in these difficult economic times, the underground workforce of illegal aliens is taking jobs away from newly arrived legal immigrants, high school graduates, and other Pennsylvanians who desperately need a job.

Mayor Barletta started the national debate about illegal immigration in June 2006, when he proposed and spearheaded the Illegal Immigration Relief Act, an ordinance passed by the Hazleton City Council that requires all employers in the city to check the immigration status of all of its employees and for all landlords to keep on file a city-issued permit for all tenants. The ordinances also made English the language of official city business in Hazleton.

On the eve of the introduction of Pennsylvania’s own law, Mayor Barletta also asked where his opponents in the 11th Congressional District race – Rep. Paul Kanjorski, Corey O'Brien, and Brian Kelly – stand on the Arizona law.

“For more than a week, this legislation has been in the forefront of American debate, yet Mr. Kanjorski, Mr. O'Brien, and Mr. Kelly remain woefully silent on this critical national issue,” Mayor Barletta said. It's time they take a public position on this bill.

“I'd especially like to hear from Mr. Kanjorski, who absolutely needs to explain his inaction in securing our borders and stopping the flow of illegal aliens into the United States, Pennsylvania, and the 11th District. “He cannot continue to hide behind spokesmen. Let's hear from him directly.”

Kanjorski And Limousine Service

For the last two days the Today Show liberals Ann Curry and Matt Lauer have been pounding the RNC over air travel and limousine service paid for with campaign donations. Forget that Nancy Pelosi wanted to use taxpayer money to fly supporters all over the U.S. in a modified 757. It doesn't stop there. How about her repeated requests to use military jets and receive military escorts?

This report details the slanted way Curry and Lauer report on issues when it involves Nancy Pelosi.

NBC's Ann Curry offered a brief mention in her 7am news update and then Matt Lauer squeezed in a question about it during a larger q and a with David Gregory:

Let's take a look at Paul Kanjorski's 2008 and 2009 campaign expenditures for limousine service and hold his feet to the fire.

Kanjorski, Murphy,And The Vote Against Carney.

In January, 2008 Congressmen Paul Kanjorski, Chris Carney, and Tim Holden appeared on WVIA TV on its segment "Bringing the House Home". During that presentation Chris Carney took a shot at Kanjorski because he brought home almost 3 times as much in earmarks than Kanjorski as a first termer.

Their differences didn't stop there. Kanjorski and Carney were at odds with the $700 billion dollar bailout bill in November 2008.

It's no secret that Paul Kanjorski and John Murtha were close friends. Politico wrote a story about their love of earmark money in 2007. Reiterating the saga of Cornerstone Technologies Ken Vogel wrote "In 1998, with the help of Rep. John P. Murtha, a fellow Pennsylvanian and the top Democrat on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, Rep. Kanjorski earmarked $3.5 million for the research through the Navy." John Murtha used his seat on the Appropriations committee to become known as the "legendary appropriations earmarker from Johnstown".

As the wind blows it was no secret John Murtha supported fellow Democrat Carney as evidenced by his appearance at this Carney fundraiser. It appears Murtha wanted to take Carney under his wings.

Nobody can say that Kanjorski's memory is failing him. After John Murtha's passing it came time to replace his seat on the House Appropriations Committee. The media reported Kanjorski didn't support Carney for the position. Kanjorski's rescue team tried to couch its position on the vote by claiming it was secret but the cat was out of the bag.

Gort42 reported on his blog that Murtha backed Carney for a seat on the panel. Carney's appointment would have benefited Kanjorski but more importantly Northeastern Pennsylvania. Instead it appears Kanjorski threw his support to Philadelphia and Patrick Murphy. I wonder if Kanjorski went overboard into the ocean with women and children whether he would give them the life preserver first.

The vote was deja vu for Carney all over again. In December 2006 then freshman Chris Carney was denied a seat on the same committee despite a pledge by John Murtha to see he was appointed to it. One can't blame Murtha for trying but he just didn't have the votes. Carney should have said he was an earmark. Murtha would have been all over it.

Corey O'Brien, Kanjorski's primary opponent this election season, seized on the opportunity to discredit Kanjorski even though Kanjorski's office tried to deflect the criticism of a supposed secret vote. Evidently despite the claims by Ed Mitchell and Paul Kanjorski about his senority when it comes down to brass tacks Kanjorski doesn't have enough strength to hang a piece of paper on corkboard.

You may remember that Charlie Rangel held fundraisers for Murphy, Kanjorski, and Carney. Kanjorski and Murphy refused to give the money back. At least Chris Carney was willing to donate it to charity demonstrating his military training and instilled values.

As far as Patrick Murphy goes his political tactics mirror Paul Kanjorski. This letter to the editor that appears from The Intelligencer on Philly.com exposes a press release from Murphy that appears to intentionally mislead the public.

To the Editor:

Shortly after proudly voting "yes" on the health care bill, 8th District Congressman Patrick Murphy issued a press release entitled, "Bucks County Small Businesses Thank Rep. Murphy For Supporting Healthcare Insurance Reform." As a local small-business owner, my husband has heard underwhelming business support for Murphy around Bucks County. Thus, being baffled by the press release, we did a little research.

It seems that the organization that issued this "thank you" to Murphy, The Small Business Majority, is a nonprofit formed in 2009 to supposedly "speak for the nearly 28 million Americans who are self-employed or own businesses of up to 100 employees." But looking further into it, this organization has only 28 members nationwide. So it is really only .000001 percent of the nation's small businesses that are taking the liberty to speak for the rest of small-business owners. Furthermore, of the two lone Pennsylvania small businesses declaring membership in this "majority" organization, neither is from Murphy's congressional district.

This is just one more instance of Patrick Murphy's blatant mismanagement of truth and his repeated refusal to accurately represent his constituency. He needs to be voted out in November.

If Carney wins in November, and this is no means an endorsement, maybe he will have another shot at the seat. In the meantime he should watch his back. His bedfellows appear to have bedbugs.

The League of American Voters commenced an ad campaign aimed squarely at Paul Kanjorski. When I first saw the ad I thought O"Brien was finally jumping back in the game. However, when it finished the source was very clear.

Paul Kanjorski On Congressional Pay Raises

Seniors- did you receive the cost of living increase that Paul Kanjorski is talking about in this video from January, 2009.

Kanjorski- Democrats Will Lose

"If the election is decided as a referendum on the last 14 months, this coming November, the Democrats are going to lose," Kanjorski said.

Yesterday, Paul Kanjorski opened up his campaign tour with visits to the editorial departments of the Citizen's Voice and the Times Leader. He spent time trying to convince them that the problems facing the American people were the actions of the Democratic party but not him. For a moment I thought I heard Slim Shady in the background "Say it wasn't me". He not only sought to distance himself, from the articles it sounds like he was talking about another party altogether.

It might be fitting that he and Tiger Woods chose the same week to launch "Damage Control".

In a not so distance past Barack Obama handed Paul Kanjorski his victory. He latched onto Barack Obama like a koala bear cub hugs its parent. At the same time Ed "The Distraction" Mitchell launched a campaign to paint Lou Barletta tied to the hip of George Bush which couldn't have been further from the truth. Bush never supported Barletta's immigration stand so it was just plain "Russian propaganda" 60's style vs. the real relationship.

The same analogy doesn't apply to Kanjorski with Obama. It's funny how blogger comments dig Barletta for his appearances on Lou Dobb. Kanjorski couldn't wait to get in front of the camera Alexander Haig style on CNBC or any network that would have him.

One has to give Paul credit. His condenscending tone never goes away. He talks about Corey O"Brien calling him a nice young man, translation, a young pup from NEPA while I am the elitist from Washington.

“If I were to leave this year, the longest-serving legislator in the region will be Sen. Bob Casey,” Kanjorski said. “We are losing state Senators Bob Mellow and Ray Musto, who are retiring. If I go and Sen. Casey is not re-elected in his next run, then we might as well close down the ballroom.” Geez, Paul I didn't know Washington would stop running without you. What a pompous statement.

Kanjo tells the Times Leader we need his clout in Washington. “I’m in the right place at the right time to do the right thing,” Kanjorski said. “And the chance of accomplishment is there.” Geez, Paul wasn't that your story two years ago?

Kanjorski, D-Nanticoke, blamed the Obama administration's inflexibility.."His administration and he seemed to freeze in place, and so did the Congress that 'we don't give a damn, we're going to have health care.'" Kanjorski said during an interview Wednesday with The Citizens' Voice editorial board.

Remember this commercial:

Evidently Mr. Kanjorkski and Mr. Mitchell would prefer if it wasn't around.

Michael Sisak writes this commentary in his article. The challenge for Kanjorski and other House Democrats is overcoming a perception, pushed by Republicans and members of the growing Tea Party movement, that they are not governing.

Perception..hmmm. Is it perception that TARP funds were spent to bail out the banks? Is it perception that the automakers had their industry engulfed like phagocytosis by the United States Government? Is it perception that $300 billion of Stimulus funds were spent? Is it perception that the federal deficit has more than tripled the record in just one year under Kanjorski and Obama's watch? Is it perception that our children and our grandchildren were handed I.O.U's that they are responsible for by persons they probably will never meet? It is more than perception; it's reality.

We can't keep electing the same people and expect a different result. It is time to send Kanjorski and other incumbents(yes, there are a few Republicans as well) to the same retirement community Chris Dodd and Evan Bayh chose as their new address.

Corey O'Brien- Roderick Explores Winning And Losing

In this week's Roderick Random notes veteran politics reporter BORYS KRAWCZENIUK opines on the merits of an O'Brien challenge to Paul Kanjorski's seat in the 11th Congressional district. Corey O'Brien, Lackawanna County Commissioner, is taking a bold step in his political career by challenging Kanjo's 24 year occupation of that seat.

Borys details the winning percentage points by Kanjorski against Lou Barletta. He highlights many reasons why O'Brien may be able to unseat Kanjorski. However, Jeff Brauer, a political science professor at Keystone College sums up the argument against an O"Brien win with this statement.
"I can't imagine why he thinks he can win,"

I spoke with a potential candidate for the 116th seat in Pennsylvania. I told him that loses are as important as wins. Kanjorski lost to Ray Musto, Jim Nelligan, and Frank Harrison before he beat Harrison for the seat. Those loses built notoriety. Of course after winning the seat Kanjorski built notoriety of his own but that is another story. You are the company you keep, Charlie Rangel, John Murtha, etc.

If O'Brien loses it isn't a devastating loss. Just the fact the he wants to run against Kanjorski shows that there is more than one sector of voters who really want Kanjorski out. Corey's statement on WILK that those who have benefited from Kanjorski's seniority the most was Paul Kanjorski and family sums up the sentiment behind the challenge.

Kanjorski is proud of his association with Barack Obama. If anything was learned from the Luzerne County mess it should be that one party political dominance is never a good thing for the citizens. I am sick of hearing how bad the Republicans are, that they are contrarians right now. Well, someone should be questioning policies and legislation. IF that questioning is quelled and suppressed you end up with the mess in Luzerne County that is beyond comprehension.

Much has been made of the judges in Luzerne County. Forget that. Take a look at all the other persons involved who had nothing to do with judiciary. The culture of corruption pervaded the halls of an institution that took an oath to protect and serve, not injure and profit.

To rally behind Paul Kanjorski over seniority is like supporting a false prophet. Paul has developed an arrogance in office like the culture that infected Luzerne County. I am not saying he is guilty of any crime, just that he feels his seniority allows him to ignore constituents and still be elected.

He didn't want to host town hall meetings on healthcare reform because, as he stated on WILK, he could reach more constituents by phone. Paul, you need to face your people, see their expressions, look at their body language. That is how you gauge what they really feel. It's hard to do that by land line.

Ed Mitchell Says Kanjorski Protected Social Security

When Corey O'Brien announced his candidacy for the Democratic nod in next year's primary for the 11th Congressional District spinmaster Ed Mitchell rode to the rescue with his usual rhetoric of misdirection. In the story featured in the Scranton Times BY BORYS KRAWCZENIUK Mitchell is quoted as saying Kanjorski "looks forward to a full and thorough debate of his record and the issues in the primary election."

"He believes that in today's tough economic times we need a congressman who has a record of fighting for veterans' benefits, protecting Social Security and Medicare for seniors and pushing for job creation and affordable health care for all working families," By the way Corey, these are free and on me.

Here's what Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson had to say about Social Security last year according to Jeanne Sahadi, CNNMoney.com senior writer.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, saying that Social Security is "financially unsustainable," called Tuesday for quick action to keep the system strong and released a report detailing the program's funding shortfalls.

The federal government will have to start paying back what it owes the Social Security trust fund in 2017 so the program can continue paying 100% of benefits. By 2041, if the system is left unchanged, Social Security will only be able to pay out 78% of benefits promised to future retirees.

You see Paul Kanjorski and Congress have been raiding the Social Security Trust fund for years mismanaging its assets in a way that has put the future of its ability to pay benefits as promised.

On the issue of Medicare Obama has declared that seniors will be denied a raise in Social Security benefits although Medicare Premiums will rise. Congress received its automatice pay raise in January to the tune of $4,700.00 bringing the total salary to $174,000.00.

Why doesn't Congress eliminate the automatice pay raise provision in law and refuse to take any raise until the economy turns around and jobless claims start to fall, not rise? Since they vote to increase Social Security benefits and Medicare premiums why doesn't the voter get to vote whether they get a raise or not? Representative Joe Sestak introduced a bill to delay Congressional pay raises in 2010. It went nowhere because it didn't have one co-sponsor.

Mitchell took exceptional issue with O'Briens hint about Cornerstone Technologies. While it may be true that Paul Kanjorski never got a dime the same can't be said about members of his family. Those members received pay that was funded with federal money.

Comments on Gorts blog referenced the length of time Kanjorski has been in office and his seniority. It's a fact that Chris Carney brought almost 3 times as much money to his district than Kanjorski brought to the 11th last year. As far as committees Kanjorski sits on they regulate the financial sector. We are in the worst recession since the Great Depression. How did his seniority help with that mess or did it create it?

How do you support a Congressman that believes money handed out for pet projects is free money?

Pennsylvania Democrats- Take Notice

As the great debate on healthcare reform winds its way through our Legislative Branch of the federal government potential political fallout is already on the nuclear horizon.

On Dancer, On Prancer, On Daschle, On Reid. Looks like Senator Harry Reid may suffer the same fate as his predecessor, Tom Daschle according to Stephen Clark at FoxNews. Tom "The Dancing Bug" Daschle should have made it to "On Dancer With The Stars". Instead it was a Delay by Tom that beat him to the punch.

Reid is trailing two GOP candidates in next year's Senate race and the Democratic-sponsored health care bill could determine whether he stays in power or suffers the same stunning fate as his predecessor, Tom Daschle, who failed to win re-election in South Dakota in 2004 despite being the Senate's top Democrat.

GOP candidate Danny Tarkanian, a former University of Nevada-Las Vegas basketball player and son of the legendary basketball coach, leads Reid 50 to 43 percent. GOP candidate Sue Lowden, former chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party who officially launched her campaign Thursday, is beating Reid 50 to 40 percent, according to a recent poll by Rasmussen Reports.

"Any incumbent who polls below the 50% level is considered potentially vulnerable and Reid is clearly in that category," the report read.

Kanjorski, we're a coming for ya..Don't look so worried...And it won't stop there......If I were Kanjo resigning with dignity would be a much better path than Frank Fay and Dan Flood suffered. Ed Mitchell, sharpen that pencil...you aren't as good as you once were.....The Obama Tsunami only happens once in a lifetime. If I were you guys start stock piling the cash..O"Brien is going to be formidable...He is hungry...Kanjo is Greedy...Seniors aren't getting a cost of living adjustment but Congress loved it 17% increase this year. And folks they are still getting next year, the year after..and on and on and on....

How come the local media isn't asking Kanjorski about this issue?? And why aren't they asking why a court administrator post gets $97,050.00 per year?? Then they wonder why they can't sell newspapers. Forget the liberal agenda. Taxpayers are subscribers...a free piece of advice.

Kanjorski is so out of touch with the his constituents he was captured saying $2 trillion dollars wasn't alot of money with his distinct air of condescension.
