Specter Vs. Eachus
Previously Arlen Specter announced that he would sponsor a bill where federal funds would pay to take material dredged from the Delaware River to abandoned mines in Hazleton.
Given the posture that Todd Eachus takes to go out of his way and oppose the use of dredge to reclaim abandoned mines in Hazleton maybe my friend Gort can ask Arlen how he feels about the effort to oppose use of the dredge when he arrives in Hazleton tomorrow.
Specter called the start of dredging, which teamed with now-deceased Sen. John Heinz to advocate 27 years ago, a great day for Pennsylvania because of the economic impact.
Deepening the 102-mile shipping channel in the Delaware to 45 feet from 40 feet will create jobs on the ports and spin-off jobs for 125,000 people, Specter estimated.
John Estey, chairman of the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority, estimated that dredging will create 30,000 to 35,000 jobs just at the ports.
Container ships need a deeper channel that dredging will create, Estey said.
"In the next five years, pretty much every ship will require at least 42 feet of water. This is the most important project in the history of the ports along the river," he said.
Todd Eachus announced the PaJobsNow package according to Brett Marcy's Twitter page. Listen here: http://cot.ag/bEUOia
Guess those weren't the jobs he was talking about. Maybe the Mayor could arrange a meeting between Arlen and Todd so Arlen can set Todd straight with some "honest notjustawhistlindixie".
Regarding Eachus's comment in the Standard Speaker about Chuck Roger's concerns over the Hazleton Creek Properties project where he is quoted as stating "We finally found an honest whistleblower inside the Department of Environmental Protection," maybe he should read this Dear Abby column from November 18, 1995 about whistleblowers.
However, informing on neighbors requires some judgment. Before you pick up the phone or pen, be sure their "violation" realistically infringes on you or others, and that is not simply a case of disapproval on your part."

Paul Kanjorski- Get Out of Washington Literally
In an interview on CNBC April 5, 2010 Paul Kanjorski makes the claim that he agrees with President Barack Obama "that we probably turned the corner, it hasn't been spectacular but we are on our way to growth". In the chart above from the Times-Tribune the first three counties listed are in Kanjorski's district but by his comments one wouldn't know it.
Mr. Kanjorski should get out of Washington literally and read what the newspapers in his district are saying about economic recovery. In today's Times Tribune James Haggerty writes a column about the increasing bankruptcies in Northeastern Pennsylvania among contractors.
Rising bankruptcy filings among contractors reflect the continuing slump in the area construction industry.
Three construction companies have filed for protection since February in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
"The volume of business dropped very sharply through 2009," said Kenneth Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America, a trade group based in Arlington, Va. "I don't expect an upturn in private residential construction until 2011. I would not be surprised if you hear about a lot more bankruptcies."
Contractors' difficulties surfaced among the 2,789 first-quarter bankruptcy filings in the 33-county court district. The total represents a 10.7 percent increase in cases over the January-to-March period of 2009.

Kanjorski- It Is Time You Retire
If you visit this site the letters are overwhelmingly against Paul Kanjorski and the policies of Barack Obama.
Here is one such letter:
Subject:
You are a rediculously inhuman and insensitive representative!
To:
Rep. Paul Kanjorski
June 30, 2009
The fact that you would vote "yes" to the largest tax hike in the history of America, under the guise of clean energy while the middle american man and woman are already struggling with the largest unemployment rate in decades, along with businesses closing their doors..... as they struggle to feed their children and keep a roof over their heads is contemptible!!!
You representative Kanjorsy are truly a man with no regard for the regular man or woman! You truly are a irrepairable and immoral man in all of your judgement as you allow for politics to dominate your sense of right and wrong.
Its not the "polluters" and the "rich" that are going to pay the cost for your irresponsibility and your political payoff and associations!!!! it is the everyday working man and woman! the ones that even today are struggling to pay their electric bills, keep food on the table, and roofs over their heads!
You truly are less than a human!! i actually thought that their may be some hope for you congressman as i follow your votes.... But you truly are a whore to the democratic party with no remorse and under the false guise of caring for Pennsylvanians while Pennsylvanians are one of the many states that are truly going to bear the biggest brunt of the largest Tax in history, that YOU VOTED FOR!!!
Shame on you! The only good thing i see is that you democrats are making the american people extremely angry which guarantees that your irresponsible and corrupt political involvement in this country will be at an end soon! You better start looking for a new job!
With absolute and resolute contempt,
East Stroudsburg , PA

Sallie Mae Announces 600 Jobs, Formerly Overseas, For NEPA-
Call me synical but what the hell was Sallie Mae doing sending 2,000 jobs overseas in the first place. The dog and pony show by Paul Kanjorski and Bob Casey today detracted from asking that question which is germane to any discussion about "BRINGING BACK JOBS". You don't mean to tell me that Sallie Mae was exploiting the cheap labor overseas. Nahh...that would never happen. Kanjo and Casey should have thought this one through a little more. Why did they let the jobs go overseas?
Let's take a few highlights from the SEC filings for SLM-stock ticker symbol for the private firm, Sallie Mae.
Our primary business is to originate, service and collect student loans. We provide funding, delivery and servicing support for education loans in the United States through our participation in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (“FFELP”) and through our non-federally guaranteed Private Education Loan programs.
At December 31, 2008, we had approximately 8,000 employees.(Note-According to their Form 10-K filings for years 2005 through 2007 they had 11,000 employees.)
Our primary marketing point-of-contact is the school’s financial aid office.
To sum up ,although all of their business is derived in the United States one quarter of their work force is overseas and will continue to be for the near future.
If you look here you will find the principal facilities owned and leased by Sallie Mae. Are any of those facilities overseas? I don't see a one.
I went down their corporate structure and clicked on every entity. Not one listed an overseas address.
In 2004 their Form 10-K listed 9,000 employees. As previously stated the number was increased from 9,000 to 11,000 in 2005 and remained there through 2007. In the 2008 filing the number was decreased to 8,000 employees.
So basically they fired 3,000 employees in the U.S. Evidently they replaced them with 2,000 people overseas in India etc. Now they want to bring them back. Magnanimous of them isn't it? Instead of hailing them for gesture they should be chided for the first act because all of their loans originate in the U.S. according to their filings.

Capital Investment Leads To More Jobs
So what does Fred Smith, CEO of FedEx have on his mind:
The realistic optimist: People are not buying a lot of stuff today, but come the fourth quarter, I think maybe you'll see the economy start heading in the right direction. I would be surprised if it doesn't improve over the next year or so, almost regardless of what they do in Washington.
Finding an economic engine: We think the stimulus misses the mark. Business capital investment is really the locomotive that pulls the train. We've been advocating for a long time for industrial companies to be able to expense capital equipment and software when it's put into service. That's so important, because if you track business capital investment and job creation or job loss, it's 100% correlated.
On taking bailout funds: If you take government money and you get yourself in the public arena, then the Congress, quite frankly, has a right to put whatever restrictions on you that they desire. That's really the cost of the deal.

Temp Agency Made $12 million With Illegal Aliens
According to the Daily Item a 50-year-old Danville man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in federal prison for operating a temporary employment agency with illegal immigrants that generated $12 million in revenue between 2002 and 2007.
A federal investigation revealed Nguyen's laborers were undocumented workers and that his agency made in excess of $12 million over a five-year period. Because the income generated was from the use of an illegal workforce, H&T failed to make payments of $213,833 to the Pennsylvania Unemployment Compensation Program and $345,172 to the U.S. Medicare Trust Fund, according to Carlson.
Most of the laborers worked at a cosmetics makeup tubing company in Stroudsburg, according to U.S. Attorney Martin C. Carlson. -Probably jobs Americans would not take, right????
