Luzerne County Commissioner Steve Urban announced he is switching his political registration from Republican to Democrat. In this Times Leader article by Jennifer Learn-Andes he cites lack of support for his latest candidacy within the Republican party and lack of unity among the Republicans for his main reasons to jump ship.
Let's tackle his claim- the lack of support for his candidacy. Anyone who paid attention this election knows that the independent voter determined this election, hands down, not Republicans. According to Luzerne County statistics there are 188,091 registered voters- 110,165 Democrats, 61,287 Republicans, and 15,933 Independents.
In this last election 15,775 Luzerne County Democrats and 15,457 Luzerne County Republicans cast a straight ballot. In case Urban wasn't paying attention that means he received overwhelming Republican support since his vote total was 18,863. House Representative John Yudichak, now Senator Yudichak, received 30,171 total votes.
In this report filed by Terri Morgan-Besecker the day after the election she made these observations. Urban performed much better in Monroe County, defeating Yudichak with 2,131 votes compared to Yudichak’s 1,697 votes. Urban also performed well in Carbon County, garnering 4,553 votes to Yudichak’s 5,122 votes
Obviously Urban's math doesn't pass the litmus test. Switching parties will almost certainly mean defeat for any future office he seeks. Tom Stish, Parker Griffith, and Arlen Specter. The homework lesson Urban failed to perform is evident in his presentation to the public.
I'll paraphrase Dale Carnegie. Politicians just do not want to admit to any wrong doing, and put the blame on everyone else instead of really looking at the situation. There you are; human nature in action, wrongdoers, blaming everybody but themselves.
GOP County Chairman Terry Casey aired a little dirty laundry in the article by stating the possibility that a few party leaders may have “overstepped their boundaries” by supporting Yudichak. Engineering an effective campaign effort gets the desired results not boundaries set by party bosses. Polling would have told Urban his weaknesses. That is how a politician tailors his messages during the campaign. But I guess Urban didn't ask anyone for advice. It wouldn't have mattered anyway.
Look at Yudichak's record as a representative and look at Urban's as a commissioner. Hands dow the voters pick the right person for the job. The days of straight party voting are long gone. And for now it appears so is Urban.

Kanjorski Is Out Of Touch
In today's Standard Speaker Paul Kanjorski wants to remind Americans that the Democrats should be proud of what they accomplished.
"First, and foremost, when I say Democrats, stand up tall, be proud. My God, the Democratic Party did everything that was good for this country and good for the working individuals of this country, and good for the middle class of this country. We have nothing to apologize for."
"You know why I'm charged up?" Kanjorski said in an interview later. "Because I think it is one of the most definitive elections in our lifetime. And that's why I'm in it. Because I think we can't afford to make the mistake of going in the wrong direction. And all of these people who are talking about going in another direction, they're (like) pre-Franklin Roosevelt people."
Evidently this chart is what he means.
"They want to go back to when Wall Street billionaires or millionaires controlled this country and their kids could just slosh around, didn't have to work, didn't have to produce and they were guaranteed their membership at the country club and their membership at the yacht club," Kanjorski said. "I don't believe in that. I believe in a merit society.
Paul, are you talking about the firms that gave you $4 million in political contributions? Paul, are you talking about the people who had American working?
This statement by Kanjorski is going to resonate over the next few days.
"The fight's not about the damn mosque in New York," he tells the Democrats at Waldorf Park. "All of us are annoyed at the fact that ... they want to build that mosque, but it's not going to have an effect on our lives.
Kanjo, you tell that to these people.
I feel sorry for you. When you are used to this it is hard to remember the sacrifices I guess.

Do The Monroe County Democrats Know They Espouse Republican Values?
Today I decided to take a look at politics in Monroe County, Pennsylvania. A Google search quickly took me to the site of the Monroe County Democrats. I was astounded at their platform..Damn, they sound like Republicans and don't know it.
The Monroe County Democratic Party supports the goal of affordable housing for all citizens. The Emergency Relief and Construction Act (ch. 520, 47 Stat. 709, enacted July 21, 1932), was the United States's first major-relief legislation, enabled under Herbert Hoover. That was the government's first major involvement in the housing field according to the HUD website.
The Monroe County Democratic Party supports a budget that is fiscally sound and reflects the real needs of the American people. From the 6th District Republican Committee- We believe in fiscal responsibility, low taxes and smaller government. Interesting that the Monroe Democrats uses a jobless rate of greater than 5% as a target. They must really be dismayed at their own party sporting a 10.2% rate.
The Monroe County Democratic Party understands that the protection of our environment and the stewardship of our land are vital to the strength of our communities. President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.
The Monroe County Democratic Party believes that inherent dignity and recognition of equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world.
In the 26 major civil rights votes after 1933, a majority of Democrats opposed civil rights legislation in over 80 percent of the votes. By contrast, the Republican majority favored civil rights in over 96 percent of the votes. It was the Republicans through Abraham Lincoln who opposed slavery. In fact the Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act in 1875 long before another version was passed in 1964. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court struck down the Civil Rights Act of 1875, as well as a number of other civil-rights measures enacted by Republicans to protect the freed slaves. In Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), the court gave constitutional cover to segregation, effectively prohibiting federal efforts to tackle racial inequality until Brown v. Board of Education in 1954. And any federal civil-rights laws left on the books were repealed by Democrats once they got control of Congress and the White House in 1893. President Eishenhower's efforts cannot go unnoticed in 1957 and 1960.
The Monroe County Democratic Party supports the improvement of all area roads to facilitate travel and ensure safety. The Republicans through President Dwight Eisenhower established the Interstate Highway system. It is their Democratic Governor and Democratic controlled House that want to toll Interstate 80 running through Monroe County. It is Democratic Congressman Paul Kanjorski who favors tolling I-80.
"Tolls and taxes are never popular, and I would prefer to find an alternative for funding Pennsylvania's highways without establishing tolls on I-80. However, I believe that the federal government should respect the decisions made by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."
The Monroe County Democratic Party realizes and supports the need for women to be represented in all walks of life. The Republican Party became the first party to recognize women suffrage and the role of women in its platform.
In 1917, Jeannette Rankin, a Montana Republican, became the first woman to serve in the House. Shortly after Ms. Rankin’s election to Congress, the 19th Amendment was passed in 1919. The amendment’s journey to ratification had been a long and difficult one. Starting in 1896, the Republican Party became the first major party to officially favor women’s suffrage. That year, Republican Sen. A. A. Sargent of California introduced a proposal in the Senate to give women the right to vote.
Republicans led the fight for women’s voting rights — and the Democrats, as a party, opposed civil rights for women. All of the leading suffragists — including Susan B. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton — were Republicans. In fact, Susan B. Anthony bragged, after leaving the voting booth, that she had voted for “the Republican ticket — straight.”
This post should enlighten those who continue to demonize the Republican party today.

It gets tiring hearing how Republicans are the rich ones. The Democratic battlecry about wealth needs to be stopped. As you can see out of the top twelve Members of both chambers the highest net worth trophies go to nine Democrats. Only three are Republicans. Senate Chief Joe Scarnati Aims To Restore Public Trust
Lancasteronline.com is reporting that Senate Leader and Lt. Governor Joe Scarnati wants to restore public confidence in Harrisburg after reeling from a series of scandals.
"Without out doubt, there is no issue more important today. The No. 1 issue we have is restoring respect and trust back into the Legislature that we once had," said Scarnati, who is the Senate's president pro tempore and the state's lieutenant governor.
Speaking at a fundraiser here on Wednesday night, the Jefferson County Republican also touched on the GOP's role in budget negotiations. He said the lawmakers in his party should view the looming $2.3 billion budget deficit as an opportunity to take a stand.
"The party of Lincoln and Reagan — some of these people have forgotten their roots," Scarnati said. "This budget deficit we're in, this can be our shining moment. Taxing and spending are the Republican rally. We have to keep them under control.
"As we move forward through this process, let me tell you one thing: There will not be a broad-based tax increase coming out of anybody's pocket," said Scarnati, drawing applause at a GOP fundraiser.
